Nutrition

“Our physical bodies are made up of water, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and similar substances. Therefore, it’s logical to expect that if something is wrong with our bodies, proper manipulation of the elements of which they are made will be a major factor in re- establishing health” Jonathan Wright, MD

The definition of nutrition is: the science of foods and the nutrients and other substances they contain, and of their actions within the body. A broader definition includes the social, economic, cultural and psychological implications of food and eating.

Nutrition comes first in disease diagnosis and treatment, and nutrient related disorders are usually curable once nutritional balance is achieved. Food has the power to heal and give vitality. Unfortunately, it also has the power to damage and destroy the human body. Foods bring to the table a variety of pleasures, traditions, and associations as well as nourishment. It is important that food be used sensibly and intelligently in order to achieve optimum health.

Food contains thousands of beneficial nutritional substances of which only a small proportion have yet been isolated, researched, tested and available for therapeutic application. But these nutritional supplements have quickly gained wide acceptance and are being consumed on a regular basis.

The main impetus for the use of supplements has been the recognition that with our increasingly polluted environment and production of nutrient depleted, adulterated food the consumption of a varied diet may not be all that is required to maintain optimal health. Not surprisingly, these natural supplements, which assist and stimulate the natural healing processes of the body, have been found to be effective in treating a wide range of diseases as well as in the prevention of disease. They are also being used within elite sporting groups as performance enhancing, ergogenic aids. This is a very exciting area of research and practical application.

Naturopathic Nutrition can be learnt as part of our Advanced Diploma of Nutritional Medicine or our Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy.
