Naturopathy

"To the uninformed, naturopathic medicine as well as the entire concept of natural medicine, appears to be a fad that will soon pass away. To the informed, however, it is quite clear that naturopathic medicine is at the forefront of the future." - Michael Murray ND

Naturopathy is not a single modality of healing, but a combination of healing practices whose philosophical roots date back thousands of years. Today’s Naturopathic practitioner incorporates the most recent scientific knowledge and research with the healing wisdom of many cultures and modalities to provide a service based on the long held principles of naturopathic Medicine, which are:

  • Treat the cause rather than the effect – the underlying cause of a disease is sought and treated, not just the symptoms;
  • Treat the whole person – each individual is a complex interaction of mind, body and soul that can be influenced by physical, spiritual and social factors. The naturopathic practitioner will take all these factors into consideration when supporting a client;
  • The healing power of nature – the naturopathic practitioner works with the body’s innate ability to heal itself and facilitates this natural process with the aid of natural therapies;
  • First do no harm – by the use of natural, safe and effective therapies, the naturopathic practitioner is committed to the principle of doing no harm;
  • The physician is the teacher – the naturopathic practitioner is a teacher who educates, empowers and motivates clients to take responsibility for their own health;
  • Prevention is the best cure – prevention of disease is accomplished through a lifestyle that supports optimal health – a Naturopath coaches clients on healthy lifestyle choices.

Naturopathic practitioners make recommendations on lifestyle and diet to produce optimal health, and in cases of disease they combine their knowledge of natural, non-invasive healing techniques to assist nature’s healing. The Naturopathic arsenal for treating disease is now immense.

The comprehensive Advanced Diploma of Naturopathy is taught by practising Naturopaths ensuring the student obtains the necessary skills to become an accomplished, professional, naturopathic practitioner.

Studying at the NSW School of Natural Medicine was one of the best choices I have ever made. The course was practical and their teachings drew upon a good balance of ancient experiential knowledge and the latest scientific research. The good number of clinic hours we completed was a fundamental part of preparing us for dealing with real cases in our own clinics. My teachers were all practitioners, rather than academics, and were very knowledgeable with years of clinical experience behind them. Smaller class sizes meant a more intimate teaching style, and lecturers were able to pay more attention to the individual student. Our study environment was on beautifully serene acreage, which really helped maintain our wellbeing in such a mentally demanding time. I especially enjoyed our lessons in the herb garden, where we were able to grow and cultivate commonly used herbs, which we later used in our herbal manufacturing classes to produce fluid extracts. When seeking employment, I found that my studies with the NSW School of Natural Medicine were highly regarded & in the 6 years I have been a Naturopath, I have never made an unsuccessful job application. Now I have a fun and rewarding job, working for Healthworld, the makers of Metagenics, which is Australia's leading practitioner range in natural medicine, and I couldn't be happier!
